In 1998/99, a very significant difference was registered between the percentage of males who smoke on a daily basis and that of females who do likewise – the latter value being lower. However, in 2005/2006, a trend towards the mutual approximation of these two values was registered, with the increase in female smokers (34%) being far higher than that of male smokers (0,8%).

Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of people in the 15-24 age group who smoke tobacco on a daily basis increased in both males (0,8%) and females (34%). Both on the mainland as a whole and in every one of its regions, the number of male smokers was higher than that of female smokers, with the greatest discrepancy being registered in the North and in the Algarve.
