In 1998/99, a very significant difference was registered between the percentage of males who self-assessed the state of their health as being negative (bad or very bad) and the percentage of females who do likewise – the latter value being far higher. However, in 2005/2006, a reduction in that difference was registered, since the percentage decreased considerably for females (45,8%) but remained the same for males.

Between the NHI (National Health Inquiries) of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of people between the ages of 15 to 24 who self-assessed the state of their health with negative results stayed the same for males, and decreased considerably for females (45,8%). In both inquiries, females assessed the state of their health in a more negative manner than did males. The same result was registered in the regions of mainland Portugal, with the exception of Centro and Algarve.
