Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, an increase in the percentage of consumers of alcoholic beverages was registered, in both genders. This increase was more evident in females (38%) than in males (2,9%).

Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of people in the 15-24 age group who consumed some alcoholic beverages during the past 12 months increased both in males (2,9%) and in females (38%). Both on the mainland as a whole and in every one of its regions, the number of males who consumed alcohol during the last year was higher than that of females, with the greatest discrepancy between genders being registered in the Alentejo, followed by the Norte and the Algarve.
