The number of deaths due to motor accidents, in Portugal, decreased from 1558 in 2004 to 956 in 2008 (relative decrease: 38,6%). Despite of this descending trend, the number of deaths in 2008 was still high, especially to males: 728 mortal motor accidents.

The number of mortal motor accidents decreased in all Regions of Portugal, in the period 2004-2008. The Norte Region had the highest contribution to relative decrease of the total number of deaths by this cause: the value of this indicator declined by 45,5%, from 2004 to 2008, in this Region.

The number of deaths by motor accidents, in Portugal, decreased 40,0% for males and 33,7% for females, between 2004 and 2008. All Regions registered descending trends except Alentejo, where the number of female deaths increased from 20 to 28.
