In Portugal, the number of specialist doctors per 100,000 inhabitants increased 17,8% between 2001 and 2008. Increases were registered in male and female professionals (between 2004 and 2008: 6,4% and 13,1%, respectively).

From 2004 to 2008, the number of specialist doctors per 100,000 inhabitants in mainland Portugal increased 9,3%. A positive trend was registered in all Regions.

The relative increase of female Specialist doctors, from 2004 to 2008 was greater than the increase of male professionals (13, 1% and 6,4%, respectively). Lisboa Region registered the higher ratio Specialist doctor per inhabitant.
