Between 2000-2008, in Portugal, the number of nurses increased from 359,0 to 524,5 per 100 000 inhabitants (relative variation: 46,1%).

In the period 2004-2008, the number of nurses per inhabitant increased in all Regions of Portugal. Lisboa Region displayed the highest ratio and the south of the country (Alentejo e Algarve) the lowest values, all over the period.

The ratio nurses/inhabitant showed positive trends in all Regions, for male as for female professionals, in the period 2004-2008. Relative increases were higher in Norte Region (33,1% for male and 28,4% for female).
