In 2004, in Portugal, 25,2% of the total number of hospital appointments were first-time appointments. In the next year the proportion decreased to 24,9%. Since that year, the trend is positive and the value of this indicator goes toward National Health Plan target to 2010.

By 2008, the percentage of first-time appointments in the total number of out-patient appointments in National Health Service hospitals reached 31,0% in Alentejo and approximately 30% in Centro Region. Other Regions showed upward trends during analyzed period, reaching values between 26% and 28% in 2008.
