In mainland Portugal, between 2001 and 2009, risk of dying before 5 years of age decreased from 6,2 to 4,5 deaths before reaching the age of five, per 1,000 live births (relative decrease: 27,7%).

Between 2004 and 2009, in mainland Portugal, risk of dying before 5 years of age decreased from 5,0 to 4,5 deaths before reaching the age of five, per 1,000 live births (relative decrease: 10,3%). All Regions showed similar trend, except Lisboa and Alentejo Region.

Risk of dying for boys before 5 years of age decreased from 5,8%ooo, in 2004, to 5,0%ooo, in 2009 (relative decrease: 13,5%). The rate for girls also declined, but the relative decrease was lower: 4,2% (from 4,1%ooo, in 2004, to 3,9%ooo, in 2009).
