Infant mortality rate in mainland Portugal decreased from 4,8‰ to 3,6‰ between 2001 and 2009, going toward the 2010 target, although it remained higher than the best value registered in the EU 15 in 2008 (Luxembourg, with 1,8‰).

From 2004 to 2009, infant mortality rate in mainland Portugal decreased by 5,3%, from 3,8‰ to 3,6 ‰. However, Lisboa and Alentejo Regions registered an increase in this rate (respectively 16,1% and 36,6%, from 2004 to 2009).

The infant mortality rate for baby boys decreased, in Portugal, from 4,3%ooo in 2004 to 3,4%ooo in 2008. For baby girls the values were the same in 2004 and 2008.
