The rate of preterm births in Portugal increased by 32,4% between 2004 and 2008. The percentage of births after a gestation period of less than 37 weeks decreased in both genders, from 2004 to 2008.

From 2004 to 2006, the preterm birth rate, in mainland Portugal, increase slightly, from 6,8%o to 9,0%o (32,4%). In 2004, Algarve was the region showing the highest value (7,4%), and Norte and Alentejo Regions the lowest (6,5%). In 2008, Centro was the region showing the highest value (9,6%), and Algarve the lowest (68,0%).

The preterm birth rate, verified for the mainland, increased from 2004 to 2008, for both males and females (31,9% and 32,8%, respectively).
In 2004, Algarve , for males, Centro , for females, stood out as showing the highest values for mainland Portugal. In 2008, Centro Region stood out in negative terms, for males and females respectively.
In 2008, the lowest preterm birth rates were to be found in Algarve, for male (7,5%), and in Alentejo for females (8,4%).
