In Portugal, the Perinatal Mortality Rate decreased 9,5% between 2004 and 2008.The reduction in this rate essentially occurred between 2006 and 2008 (11,1%), and was mainly motivated by the reduction in the perinatal mortality rate for males (15,6% from 2004 to 2008), since the opposite trend was shown in females (an increase of 5,2%).

From 2004 to 2008, the Perinatal Mortality Rate in mainland Portugal decreased slightly, 4,2%o to 4,0%o. This trend wasn’t registered in all regions. In Norte, a reduction in the rate from 2004 to 2008 was noted (25,6%). On the other hand, the Algarve Region showed the greatest increase in this rate (25%).
The regions which presented the greatest negative variances in relation to the values for the mainland were the Alentejo, in 2004, and both the Alentejo and the Algarve in 2008. The best values, for both years, belong to Norte (4,3%0 in 2004 and 3,2%o in 2008).

The perinatal mortality rate, verified for the mainland, decreased from 2004 to 2008 for males and increased for females (15,6% and 5,1%, respectively). For males, Alentejo was the region showing the greatest decrease, 45,6% from 7,7 to 4,3.
For females, a very high rate was registered in Algarve in 2008 (an increase of 34,4% in relation to 2004).
In 2008, the lowest perinatal mortality rates were registered in Norte and Centtro, for males (3,2%o) and in Norte for females (3,2%o).
