In Portugal, the neonatal mortality rate decreased 16% between 2004 and 2008 (from 2,5%o to 2,1%o), The trend towards reduction was demonstrated essentially in males, where it decreased by 24,1% from 2004 to 2008.

From 2004 to 2008, the neonatal mortality rate in mainland Portugal decreased slightly (16%), from 2,5%o to 2,1%o. This reduction was sharper in Norte (34,6%) and less so in Algarve (3,5%).
In 2004, the region showing the greatest rate was Algarve (2,9%o) whereas the one with the lowest rate was the Centro (2%o). In 2008, the highest values were registered in the Algarve (2,8%o), and the lowest in Norte (1,7%o).

The neonatal mortality rate, verified for the mainland, decreased from 2004 to 2008, for males (from 2,9%o to 2,2%o), and for females (from 2,1%o to 2,0%o).
Centro registered the lowest values for males in 2004 and 2008, the highest were in Alentejo (2004) and in Algarve (2008). For females, Centro had the lowest value in 2004, but in 2008 was Norte who registered the smallest value, the highest value in 2004 were in Algarve, and in 2008 in Centro.
