In Portugal, despite the decrease verified between 2004 and 2006 the trend shows an increase of 1,3% between 2004 and 2008.

Region

In 2004 and 2008, the rate of children with low birth weight in mainland Portugal slightly increase . This tendency was verified in Centro and Lisboa. Norte remains equal, Alentejo and Algarve registered a reduction. The Regions showing the greatest negative variances in relation to the value for the mainland were, in 2004, the Algarve (8%), and, in 2008, Alentejo (5,2%). On the other hand, the Central Region showed the lowest values both in 2004 and 2006 (6,9% and 3,4 respectively).

In 2004 and 2008, the rate of children with low birth weight, verified for the mainland, was higher for females (8,5%) than  for males (7,0%).
In 2004, the Algarve and Alentejo Regions, for males, and the Algarve Region, for females, stood out as the regions showing the highest values in mainland Portugal. In 2008, Lisboa (7,5%), for males, and Algarve(9,3%), for females, were the ones showing the highest values.
In 2008, the best values were to be found in Algarve, for males (6,6%) and Centro for females (7,9%).
