In 1998/99 and 2005/06, the percentage of males (14,4% and 12,1%, respectively) who smoke tobacco on a daily basis was far higher than that of females (0,9% and 1,3%, respectively).

Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of people in the 65-74 age group who smoke tobacco on a daily basis decreased in males (16%) and increase in females (44,4%%), although the value for males remains substantially higher. The same result was registered in all regions of mainland Portugal.
