In 1998/99, the percentage of overweight males was higher than that of females (26,3% and 21,6%, respectively). However, in 2005/06 this difference was reduced, as a result of a greater increase in the percentage of overweight females than of overweight males (3,2% and 0,4%, respectively).

Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of overweight people in the 65-74 age group increased in both genders (0,4% for males and 3,2% for females), the males registering higher values. The same result was registered in all regions of mainland Portugal, with the exception of the Norte.
