In 1998/99, a large difference was registered between the percentage of obese males (BMI ≥ 30) and that of females, the latter being superior. In 2005/2006, this discrepancy between genders decreased, as a consequence of a greater increase in the number of male cases relative to female cases.

In 2005/2006, the highest values for obese males were in Norte (23,5%), and for females in LVT (28,8%). The lowest values were in Algarve, for both genders, 10,9 for males and 16,3 for females.
