In 1998/99, the percentage of males who self-assessed the state of their health as being negative (bad and very bad) was lower than that of females (34,6% and 53,2%, respectively). In 2005/06, the tendency was towards a reduction in that difference, resulting from a greater reduction in females (16,7%) than in males (12,1%) of instances where the answers “bad” and “very bad” were given.

Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of people in the 65-74 age group who self-assessed the state of their health as being negative decreased in both genders (12,1% in males and 16,7% in females), it being that females evaluate the state of their health more negatively than males. The same result was registered in all regions of mainland Portugal.
