In Portugal, between 2002-2004 and 2006-2008, life expectancy from 65 to 69 years increased 0,6 years for males and 0,7 years for females. Despite of the increase, the most recent value (18,3 years) is still below the National Health Plan target to 2010 (20,0 years).

Life expectancy at age 65 increased in all Regions, during the period analyzed. The increases were between 0,5 years in Algarve and 0,9 years in Norte Region.

From 2002-2004 to 2006-2008 the difference between regional values of life expectancy at age 65 decreased. The most recent data show that for males the difference is only 0,3 years (from 16,2 years in Norte to 16,5 years in Centro, Lisboa and Algarve Regions). Life expectancy for females of this age is 19,8 years in all Regions except in Alentejo, where doesn’t surpass 19,3 years.
