In 1998/99, the percentage of males (26,8%) smoking tobacco on a daily basis was far higher than that of females (4,5%). In 2005/06, this difference decreased slightly, as the percentage of male smokers fell 4,9%, whilst that of females rose 86,7% during this period.

Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of people in the 45-64 age group smoking tobacco on a daily basis decreased in males (4,9%) and increased in females (86,7%). However, males maintain far higher values than females. The same trend was registered in all the regions of mainland Portugal, being more predominant in the Alentejo and in the North, where the greatest discrepancy between genders was noted.
