In 1998/99, the percentage of males (45,6%) smoking tobacco on a daily basis was far higher than that of females (17,3%). In 2005/06, this difference decreased slightly, as the percentage of male smokers fell 17,5%, whilst that of females rose 1,2% during this period.

Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of people in the 25-44 age group smoking tobacco on a daily basis decreased by 17,5% in males, and increased by 1,2% in females. However, males maintain far higher values than females. The same trend was registered in all the regions of mainland Portugal, being more predominant in the North and the Centre, where the greatest discrepancy between genders was noted.
