In 1998/99, the percentage of overweight males was higher than that of females (25,5% and 22,1%, respectively). However, between 1998/99 and 2005/06, a sharp increase in the percentage of overweight females was registered (14,5%) as well as a slight reduction in the percentage of overweight males (-0,4%), so that the values for both genders ended up being very similar (24,4% in males and 25,3% in females).

Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of overweight people in the 55-64 age group decreased slightly for males (0,4%) and increased for females (14,5%). However, despite these oscillations, males maintain higher values than females. On a regional level, Centro and Alentejo stood out as having registered the greatest percentages of overweight people, in both genders.
