Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of overweight people in the 45-64 age group decreased in both genders (10,4% in males and 11,7% in females). On the mainland in general, males registered more excess weight than females. The same was registered in all the regions of mainland Portugal, with the exception of the Norte, where the percentage of overweight females was higher than that of males (20,1% and 15,3%, respectively). The LVT (Lisbon and Tagus River Valley) Region stood out as registering the greatest discrepancy between genders.
