In 1998/99, the percentage of males in the 55-64 age group who self-assessed the state of their health as being negative (bad and very bad) was lower than that of females. In 2005/06, there remained a large difference between genders, with a greater reduction being registered in the percentage of negative replies in males (21,4%) than in females (19%).

Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of people in the 55-64 age group who self-assessed the state of their health as being negative decreased in both genders (21,4% in males and 19% in females). Females self-assessed the state of their health in a more negative manner than did males. The same trend was registered in all the regions of mainland Portugal, being more predominant in the Alentejo and the Algarve, where the greatest discrepancy between genders was noted.
