In both of the NHI under analysis, the percentage of males in the 45-64 age group who professed to have consumed alcohol within the last 12 months was far higher than that of females. However, this difference was reduced from the 3rd to the 4th NHI, with the number of affirmative answers rising more sharply in females (18,5%) than in males (1,6%).

The percentage of people in the 45-64 age group who consumed alcoholic beverages in the last 12 months increased in both genders (by 1,6% in males and 18,5% in females). However, males maintain far higher values than females. The same trend was registered in all the regions of mainland Portugal, being more predominant in the Alentejo, where the greatest discrepancy between genders was noted.
