Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, an increase was registered in the percentage of consumers of alcoholic beverages, in both genders. This growth was more evident in females (38%) than in males (2,9%).

Between the NHI of 1998/99 and that of 2005/06, the percentage of people in the 25-44 age group who consumed alcoholic beverages in the last 12 months decreased in both genders (by 4,7% in males and 0,2% in females). However, males maintain far higher values than females. The same trend was registered in all the regions of mainland Portugal, being more predominant in Centro and Alentejo, where the greatest discrepancy between genders was noted.
